In our fast-paced world, we often rush from one task to another, constantly striving to achieve more, be more, and do more. This relentless pursuit of productivity can sometimes come at the expense of truly experiencing life. Longevity is not just about extending the number of years we live but also about enhancing the quality of those years. This post explores the concept of longevity through the lens of mindfulness and attention and how slowing down can lead to a more fulfilling and enriched life.
Understanding Longevity
Longevity is traditionally defined as the length of time that an individual lives. However, a broader definition can be:
Longevity is the length of experiencing life.
This shift in perspective emphasises the quality of our experiences rather than merely the quantity of our years. To better understand this, consider the concept of "Life Quality," which is quantified as:
This equation suggests that the richness of our life experiences is directly proportional to the attention we pay to each moment. A fulfilling life, therefore, is one where we maximise our cumulative attention across a large proportion of our days. We can significantly improve our life quality for a given lifespan by maximising the quality and quantity of our attention.
The Paradox of Busyness and Flow
In our daily lives, we often find ourselves "busy" or "in flow." While being in flow—a state where we are fully immersed and engaged in an activity—can be incredibly productive, it can also cause days to pass in a flash. During these periods, our attention per available minute is very low because we are not paying much attention to ourselves or our environment. Instead, we are focused solely on the task at hand. As a result, both the numerator (attention) and the denominator (available minutes) of our equation suffer, leading to a poor overall life experience.
For everything, there is a price, and the price for 'flow' is lost attention on other parts of life. This reduction in the amount of life we are aware of means that while we may be highly productive, we miss out on the richness of our surroundings, thoughts, and emotions. This trade-off can lead to a diminished sense of fulfilment and lower overall life quality.
The Power of Slowing Down
Slowing down and "smelling the coffee" is a powerful practice that can significantly enhance mindfulness and the experience of our available minutes. By taking the time to notice and appreciate the world around us, we can pack more experiences into the same number of hours over our lifetime. This, in turn, increases our longevity in the sense of experiencing life more fully.
We become more mindful of our surroundings, thoughts, and emotions when we slow down. This heightened awareness allows us to savour each moment, creating a richer tapestry of memories and experiences. In essence, slowing down helps us live more deeply and fully, making the most of the time we have.
My Journey of Mindfulness
After 27 years of running on the treadmill in a significant business role, I consciously decided to slow down and be more mindful. This decision has profoundly impacted my life, allowing me to appreciate the little things I overlooked. I began to measure my progress by noticing and capturing the beauty around me. Every day, I take pictures of things that catch my eye and think about interesting ideas to link to those pictures. I then post a daily photo and quote on social media. I have now been doing this for over three years - and have posted over a thousand pictures.
At the half-year mark, I am sharing a copy of my output over the first six months of 2024. Looking back, I can remember beautiful memories and thoughts that would have otherwise passed unnoticed. This practice has helped me become more calm, settled, and stable and has allowed me to appreciate the many gifts I have been given. It has also contributed significantly to my happiness.
The Benefits of Mindfulness and Slowing Down
Enhanced Well-being: Research has shown mindfulness and slowing down to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. By focusing on the present moment, we can let go of worries about the past and future, leading to a greater sense of peace and contentment.
Improved Relationships: We can build more profound and meaningful connections when fully present with others. By giving our undivided attention to our loved ones, we show them that we value and appreciate them, strengthening our relationships.
Increased Creativity: Slowing down allows our minds to wander and explore new ideas. This can lead to increased creativity and innovation, as we are not constantly rushing from one task to another and have time to ponder, ruminate and connect things in our minds that we didn't connect before.
Greater Appreciation of Life: By taking the time to notice and appreciate the small details of life, we can cultivate a sense of gratitude and wonder. We can lead to a more fulfilling and enriched life as we become more aware of the beauty and joy surrounding us.
Practical Tips for Slowing Down
Practice Mindfulness: Incorporate mindfulness practices into your daily routine, such as meditation, deep breathing, or mindful walking. These practices can help you become more present and aware of your surroundings. Use the Set Point Framework for Habit Change to gradually integrate these practices into your daily life by replacing old habits with new, mindful ones.
Set Intentions: Start each day by setting an intention to slow down and be mindful. Remind yourself throughout the day to take a deep breath and appreciate the moment. Use the Time Mastery Framework, where setting clear intentions and priorities helps you manage your time more effectively and mindfully.
Limit Distractions: Reduce distractions by setting boundaries around your time and attention. Turn off notifications, create a designated workspace, and set aside specific times for checking emails and social media.
Do Something Unfamiliar and New Every Day: Engage in activities that take you out of your comfort zone, even if it's just walking in an unfamiliar place. In a familiar environment, we operate on autopilot. We don't switch to autopilot when things are new and novel and our brains are actively engaged. This practice aligns with the Set Point Framework for Habit Change, encouraging us to break routine and stimulate our minds.
Engage in Mindful Activities: Choose activities that promote mindfulness and presence, such as yoga, gardening, or journaling. These activities can help you slow down and connect with the present moment.
Reflecting on My Journey
Reflecting on the past six months, I am grateful for the decision to slow down and be more mindful. This journey has allowed me to create beautiful memories, appreciate the small moments, and cultivate a more profound sense of happiness and fulfilment. I hope to inspire others to embrace mindfulness and experience life more fully by sharing my daily pictures and quotes on social media.
Conclusion
In our quest for longevity, it is essential to focus not only on the number of years we live but also on the quality of our experiences. By slowing down and paying attention to the present moment, we can maximize our life experience and create a more fulfilling and enriched existence.
Mindfulness and attention are crucial to living a long and meaningful life. Embrace the art of slowing down and savouring each moment; through these moments, we truly experience the beauty and richness of life.
As you embark on your mindfulness journey, remember that the goal is not to achieve perfection but to cultivate a greater awareness and appreciation of the present moment. Doing so can create a life filled with meaningful experiences, deep connections, and lasting happiness. So take a deep breath, slow down, and savour the journey.
Maximise your Life Quality by owning your Awareness.

Very nice boss. I completely agree to your point "Longevity is the length of experiencing life", the quality of time spent. I remember a quote "travel is not visiting 100 places with the same eyes, it is visiting the same place with 100 views" (it is something like this). Thanks for inspiring us.
Great reflexion on life. Impressive to be able to switch from a frenetic life to an almost contemplative one ! Inspiring for sure
